Description
Complete title: Porto - Pisan tower above the harbor
Porto (or to be more exact Porto Marina) lies in the gulf of the same name, on the west side of Corsica between Ajaccio (Aiacciu) and Calvi. The tower above the harbor has the same purpose as the Genuese towers that can be found all over the island (warnings of sarazen/moorish pirates), but it is not round as those built by Genova, it is square. A sure sign that it was built by Pisans who had several established holdings on Corsica before the Genovese took over. This tower is like the Genovese ones from the 15th century.
These towers are usually 12-17 m high and (at the base) 8-10 m wide, three other square towers remain in Porto, Morsiglia and Nonza, all others of the still standing 67 towers (originally 87) are of the name giving Genovese origin and round.
The whole Gulf of Porto is listed as am UNESCO World Heritage Site
