Description
Bodie is one of the many ghost towns remaining in the western USA after the gold rushes were over. This town is now preserved in a state of "arrested decay", after it was largely abandoned in the late 1800s (though a few remained in residency well into the 1930s).
In 1859 William S. Bodey discovered gold near what is now called Bodie Bluff in the quartz veins of volcanic rocks from the Miocenme epoch (about 23.03 to 5.332 million years before the present), but not the younger andesitic lava flows and domes (4.5 to 2 million years b.p.) that form part of the bluff.
