Bumpass Hell

Description

Bumpass Hell (named after a cowboy who "discovered" this area and was badly scalded there) is a very hydrothermally active part of the Lassen Volcanic Peak National Park, not too far from the name giving peak.

In this outpost of hell you can find many interesting volcanic features that are all connected to a hydrothermal system reaching down to a cooling magma intrusion - maybe even to parts of the main magma chamber of Lassen Peak. The hydrothermal system has lead to the alteration of much of the surface rock - depending on temperature and acidity. Besides that there are fumaroles (steam vents) and solfataras (steam vents with high sulfur content). mud pots are throwing their little (and bigger) bubbles as gas passes through them, hot water emerges from the ground, that in places steams without any vent being obvious.
The only thing missing is a geyser...

Around the fumaroles one can find minerals like pure sulfur, iron pyrite (fool's gold) and quartz. Some of the surface rocks have been altered to either kaolin or opal (as far as I could see, kaolin is the vast majority)

Wow, that IS a beautiful view. Amazing what volcanoes and tectonics can create, isn't?
